Introduction: In 2012, The British Society of Periodontology (BSP) in conjunction with the British Society of Paediatric Dentistry (BSPD) developed the Simplified Basic Periodontal Examination (SBPE). The aim of this guidance was to provide a framework for periodontal screening that was both feasible in dental practice, to allow early diagnosis of gingivitis and periodontitis. The aim of this audit was to assess compliance with screening amongst children and adolescents and also to assess compliance with other components within the BSP/BSPD guidance such as appropriate management based on SBPE scores. Methods: A total of 180 patients were audited across the three cycles, from September 2017 to January 2020. The sample consisted of patients' attending dentists' of varying levels of experience, at various locations within the CDS. There was stratification of results based on age groups and experience of dentist attended. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics. Results: There was a cycle-on-cycle percentage improvement in compliance, with an overall 13% improvement in compliance at the end of cycle 3. The most sizeable improvement was observed in the 7-11 age group (24%). Over 80% of the sample had appropriate management based on SBPE scores and 82% off the sample had an SBPE completed prior to orthodontic referral. Quality improvement measures implemented over the course of this audit included the introduction of laminated cue cards to clinics within the CDS, availability of periodontal probes in examination kits and the introduction of an SBPE section with the recommended template used to record examinations in the dental software, all to prompt clinicians to perform an SBPE. Further education was performed at departmental meetings and an electronic summary of results was circulated. Conclusion: There has been a marked improvement in periodontal screening within the CDS and it is expected that the measures implemented above further improve compliance.
