Introduction This re-audit explored whether the record keeping for inhalation sedation patients on the paediatric dental staff clinics had improved since the introduction of a new inhalation sedation record keeping sheet. The sheet outlined all the relevant details to include when treating a patient under inhalation sedation as outlined by current guidance such as recovery, escort, medical history. The audit assessed whether staff members were using the sheet and if so were all the desired details noted. If they weren't using the sheet, did this negatively impact their record keeping. Methods Patient notes were chosen sequentially from the paediatric sedation booking diary from May 2019 until October 2019 until 60 sedation episodes were recorded. If one patient had three different inhalation sedation treatments recorded in their notes for example, this would count as three episodes. The sedation treatment notes were assessed to see if they had included all the required record keeping features and if the dentist had used the sedation record keeping sheet. Results The results will be collected and analysed. They will be then be compared against the desired standard of 100% for each required record keeping element. The data will also be compared to the initial audit results to see if there has been an improvement. They will also assess whether the introduction of the record keeping sheet has influenced the results. Conclusion Hopefully the results will show that inhalation sedation record keeping on the department has improved since the last audit and all key elements are being noted. It will also show whether the record keeping sheet is being used and if it is improving record keeping for inhalation sedation. If the record keeping is still not reaching the desired standard, as a department we need to come up with more strategies to address this.
